What
are Fat Injections?
Fat
injections or fat transfers involve removal of fat from one part
of the body and transplanting it to another e.g. to the lips or
cheeks.
How
are Fat Injections carried out?
The
fat is collected in a syringe by liposuction, centrifuged and then
re-injected through a large calibre needle.
What
results can I expect from Fat Injections?
The
result depends on the fat transferred becoming a living graft and
surviving long term in its new location. Only a percentage of the
transplanted fat will survive. It will survive better in some areas
than others.
Are
Fat Injections suitable for me?
The
decision to go ahead with an aesthetic procedure is a very personal
one. The first step is a consultation with one of the qualified
plastic surgeons at the Aesthetic Day Surgery. Whatever your reasons
you should frankly discuss your personal goals and expectations
with respect to the outcome of the procedure (both physical and
emotional) with your surgeon. As with any aesthetic surgery you
should always keep in mind that the desired result is improvement,
not perfection.
How
long will the procedure take?
Depending
on the extent of the procedure, fat injection surgery may last anywhere
from 1/2 hour to 2 hours. However, please keep in mind that this
is only actual surgical time. To ensure the highest standard of
personalised patient care, attention to detail and results, the
Aesthetic Day Surgery requires you to spend appropriate time both
immediately before and after the procedure within the surgery. In
general you would need to allocate up to a full day of your time
to allow for pre-operative procedures, the surgery itself and appropriate
post operative care. (Not: this time would be in addition to your
initial and follow up consultations with an ADS Surgeon).
How
long will it take me to recover from a Fat Injection procedure?
Depending
on the site e.g. lips may be quite swollen for one week - other
areas often have very little swelling. In general most patients
would be able to return to work the next day or within a few days.
Will
the procedure leave any scars?
Fat
transplant procedures are very unlikely to leave any visible scaring.
What
are the side effects and potential complications of fat injections?
Bruising,
swelling and infection may occur. Some disappearance of the transferred
fat is inevitable. However the fat that remains at about 3-4 months
will remain long term.
