What
is an Eyelid Reduction?
An
Eyelid Reduction (or Blepharoplasty) is an aesthetic surgical procedure
on the upper and/or lower eyelids designed to improve eyelid creases
and to remove excess skin folds and bulging fat bag. Performed to
improve the bags and wrinkles around the eyes, an eyelid reduction
however will not improve wrinkles of the cheeks, temples or forehead.
How
is an Eyelid Reduction performed?
The
surgical technique will depend on your particular physical features,
the extent of the surgery and the particular method applied by your
surgeon at the Aesthetic Day Surgery to best meet your needs. Usually
upper and lower eyelid incisions are marked along natural lines,
extending into the smile lines at the outer edge of the eye. Following
removal of excess skin and fat, the incisions are then carefully
closed. An eyelid reduction is often performed as part of a facelift
procedure.
What
results can I expect?
Following
a successful eyelid reduction, patients can in general expect an
overall improvement in facial appearance with noticeable reduction
in the effects of aging - providing a more youthful and refreshed
look. The surgeon at the Aesthetic Day Surgery will give you a realistic
indication of the results you can personally expect from an Eyelid
Reduction during your initial consultation.
Is
an Eyelid Reduction suitable for me?
The
decision to go ahead with an aesthetic procedure is a very personal
one. The first step is a consultation with one of the qualified
plastic surgeons at the Aesthetic Day Surgery. Whatever your reasons
you should frankly discuss your personal goals and expectations
with respect to the outcome of the procedure (both physical and
emotional) with your surgeon. As with any aesthetic surgery you
should always keep in mind that the desired result is improvement,
not perfection.
How
long will the procedure take?
Depending
on the extent of the procedure, eyelid reduction surgery may last
anywhere from one to two hours. However, please keep in mind that
this is only actual surgical time. To ensure the highest standard
of personalised patient care, attention to details and results,
the Aesthetic Day Surgery requires you to spend appropriate time
both immediately before and after the procedure within the Day Surgery.
In general you would need to allocate up to a full day of your time
to allow for pre-operative procedures, the surgery itself and appropriate
post operative care. (Note: this time would be in addition to your
initial and follow up consultations with an ADS Surgeon).
How
long will it take me to recover after an Eyelid Reduction?
Recovery
times do vary from one patient to the next. In general most patients
will require rest for the first several days following the procedure
with stitches being removed usually on the 4-6 day. Most patients
are able to return to work and normal activities after 7-10 days
(perhaps wearing sunglasses).
Will
the procedure leave any scars?
The
advanced surgical techniques applied by the surgeons at the Aesthetic
Day Surgery are designed to minimise (and where possible eliminate)
all visible scarring. Any scarring as a result of an eyelid reduction
will be along the natural skin lines and creases of the eye and
will usually considerably fade with time and become barely noticeable.
Are
there side effects or potential complications of the procedure?
Your
surgeon at the Aesthetic Day Surgery will discuss side effects and
any potential complications directly with you at your initial consultation.
In general, patients undergoing an eyelid reduction can expect some
bruising and swelling around the eyes lasting approximately ten
to fourteen days. Temporary blurred vision and excessive tear production
may also occur. Following the advice provided to you by your surgeon
will help to reduce these side effects and the risk of any complications.
Is
there any risk of damage to the eye during the procedure?
There
is minimal risk of damage to vision or the eye. Your surgeon will
discuss complications with you which are relevant to the surgery
you are contemplating.
