What
are Anti Wrinkle injections?
Injections
to reduce muscle activity and reduce frown lines and crows feet.
It is used in very small doses to immobilise select muscles of the
face, the most common being forehead, brow and crows' feet. Other
areas such as chin or neck may also be suitable. Once the injections
have been injected into the muscle it becomes relaxed and the 'crinkles'
of the skin lie flat and hence the wrinkles are softened significantly.
How
is the procedure performed?
After
a thorough discussion, you may elect to proceed immediately with
your treatment. A discussion of your needs, a treatment plan and
costing will take place and then treatment can take place.
The
skin is numbed with an icy pole to also diminish any potential bruising.
The material is injected in several small quantities directly to
the muscle with a very fine needle. There is a quick sting, but
it is minimal. You will have several small raised blips on the skin.
A light amount of makeup without oil may be applied immediately.
Several
precautions must be taken on the day of the procedure. No heavy
exercise, no lying down for 3-4 hours and no rubbing or massaging
the blips in the skin - they will subside within the hour. Muscle
movement to the area injected is encouraged as it will cause the
muscle to take up the chemical quicker.
What
results can I expect?
The
injections will relax the furrows of the frown area or the forehead
lines or crows feet for up to three and a half to four months on
your first treatment. If you repeat the treatment as those muscles
start to move in three and a half to four months, your next treatment
may last four and a half to five months and the next one, five and
a half to six months. Usually by the third treatment you will need
injections only twice a year.
How
long does the procedure take?
You
will receive your treatment in less than thirty minutes, however,
unlike cosmetic injections or lip enhancement injections, the results
with muscle relaxants may take four to seven days to become fully
apparent. Usually patients begin to notice a relaxation of the area
with one to two days.
What
risks are involved with Anti Wrinkle injections?
As
with any procedure, the more skilled the practitioner, the less
likely any risks should occur. The
primary concern with these injections is the exact placement of
the toxin into the appropriate muscle. If incorrect placement rubbing
of the area should occur there may be a secondary effect of a heavy
brow or droopy lid. This is said to occur in less than 1% of the
treatments. If a droop were to occur, it would resolve in less than
a couple of weeks. A prescription eye-drop may be appropriate to
allow the lid to bounce back up. Minimal bruising may occur particularly
to the thin skin the the crows feet area.
Are
the Injections suitable for me?
The
decision to go ahead with an aesthetic procedure is a very personal
one. The first step is a consultation with one of the qualified
members of staff at the Aesthetic Day Surgery. Whatever your reasons
you should frankly discuss your personal goals and expectations
with respect to the outcome of the procedure (both physical and
emotional). As with any aesthetic procedure you should always keep
in mind that the desired result is improvement, not perfection.
